Install Google Course Kit for Canvas

Google Course Kit is an integration for G-Suite in Canvas. The tool is LTI compliant.

Setup
  1. Sign in as an admin
  2. Go to Accounts, Settings (typically https://uth.test.instructure.com/accounts/1/settings)
  3. Apps, View App Configuration, +App
  4. Configuration Type: Manual Entry
    A. Name: Google Course Kit Assignment Tool
    B. Consumer Key: 45cfeda4-afcb-4b93-80f5-1b5bff673709
    C. Shared Secret: ***** SAVE FOR NEXT STEP, otherwise you will have to regenerate and do this step again.
    D. Launch URL: https://coursekit.google.com/assignments/lti
    E. Domain: (leave blank)
    F. Privacy: Public
    G. Custom Fields: (leave blank)
    H. Description: (leave blank)
  5. Submit.
  6. Install Course Kit File Embed tool. Click +App
  7. Configuration Type: By URL
    A. Name: Google Course Kit File Embed Tool
    B. Consumer Key: As above
    C. Shared Secret: As above
    D. Config URL: https://coursekit.google.com/embed/lti/config.xml
Instructors: Creating an Assignment
  1. As a course instructor, click Assignments, Add Assignment.
    Create name, description, points, group, and display grade as usual.
    For Submission Type, choose "External Tool". Click "Find" and select "Google Course Kit Assignment Tool"
  2. After submit, you may open your new assignment. Note that if you are not logged in to your UTHShare account, it may ask you to switch accounts. Otherwise click Link. It will display a security notification.
  3. The next page will display the Canvas side of your Assignment. Click "Open in Course Kit" to display the Google side of the assignment, and make sure the total points equals the total points from step 1, above.
Students: Submitting an Assignment
  1. A student, opening the assignment, will initially see the Canvas side of the Assignment. They should click "Open in Course Kit".
  2. The student will be given the option to add an existing file, or to create a new one. Choosing "Add Files" will expose their UTH-Share drive, where they can add a document in response to the assignment. They will see a receipt.
  3. Having submitted the assignment, the students are no longer able to edit the document; it is locked down (view only).
Instructors: Grading Student Submissions
  1. As an instructor, when you first open the assignment, you will see submissions submitted, reviewed, and returned.
  2. If you click "Open in Course Kit" it will show you WHO submitted assignments that need grading.
  3. Clicking the submission will allow you to review the work: You can enter comments directly into the document,  submit overall feedback, enter a final grade for the effort, and then return the assignment to the student.
  4. The grade you assign will be automatically recorded in Canvas.
